The global battery recycling industry is experiencing unprecedented growth as governments, corporations, and consumers prioritize sustainability amid the rapid expansion of electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy storage. In the U.S., the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) has allocated substantial funding to bolster domestic recycling capabilities, including tax incentives for companies utilizing recycled materials in new batteries. Meanwhile, the European Union’s updated Battery Regulation mandates stricter recycling targets, requiring that by 2030, 70% of lithium and 95% of cobalt, nickel, and copper from used batteries be recovered.
China, the world’s largest EV market, has also intensified its focus on recycling, with new guidelines requiring manufacturers to establish take-back systems for end-of-life batteries. Industry leaders like CATL and Ganfeng Lithium are investing heavily in closed-loop recycling systems to reduce reliance on imported raw materials.
On the technological front, startups and established firms are pioneering more efficient recycling methods. Redwood Materials, founded by Tesla alum JB Straubel, recently announced a $1 billion expansion of its Nevada facility, aiming to produce anode and cathode materials from recycled batteries at scale. Similarly, Sweden’s Northvolt has developed a hydrometallurgical process that recovers up to 95% of battery metals with lower energy consumption than traditional smelting.

BMW, for instance, has partnered with Belgian recycler Umicore to repurpose used EV batteries into energy storage systems. Companies like ReJoule and B2U Storage Solutions are testing second-life battery systems, extending their usability and delaying the need for recycling.
3. Rising Investments – Venture capital and corporate funding in battery recycling startups have surged. According to PitchBook, global investments in the sector exceeded $2 billion in 2023, with firms like Li-Cycle and Ascend Elements attracting major backing.
4. Geopolitical Factors – Supply chain vulnerabilities, particularly for lithium and cobalt, are driving nations to secure domestic recycling capabilities. The U.S. and EU are actively reducing dependence on China for critical minerals, with recycling seen as a strategic solution.
Industry analysts emphasize that scaling recycling infrastructure remains a challenge. Dr. Linda Gaines, a researcher at Argonne National Laboratory, notes, “While technological advancements are promising, collection networks and logistics for end-of-life batteries need significant improvement to meet future demand.”
Meanwhile, Hans Eric Melin, founder of Circular Energy Storage, cautions against overestimating short-term recycling volumes. “The wave of retired EV batteries won’t peak until the late 2030s. Until then, recyclers must rely on manufacturing scrap and consumer electronics batteries,” he explains.
Corporate leaders are also weighing in. “Recycling isn’t just an environmental imperative—it’s a business necessity,” says Ajay Kochhar, CEO of Li-Cycle. “As raw material prices fluctuate, recycled content provides cost stability and supply chain resilience.”
The battery recycling industry stands at a pivotal moment, driven by regulatory pressures, technological breakthroughs, and the urgent need for sustainable resource management. While hurdles like collection inefficiencies and high processing costs persist, the sector’s rapid evolution suggests a future where recycled materials play a central role in the clean energy transition. Stakeholders across the value chain must continue collaborating to ensure that growth in battery production is matched by equally robust recycling systems.
