UK royals attend state dinner hosted by Italian President at Quirinale Palace in Rome
King Charles III and Queen Camilla attended a state dinner hosted by President Sergio Mattarella at the Quirinale palace on Wednesday evening.
At the event, which coincided with the pair's wedding anniversary, guests included Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.
At the start of the dinner President Mattarella praised the UK’s commitment to European partnership, saying "it is an element of trust to see London's clear and convinced commitment confirmed together with its European partners in the protection of the international order."
"That order based on rules that together we have helped to establish and on whose safeguard a future of peace and security for humanity depends," he added.
Earlier in the day the King and Queen met privately with Pope Francis, in the first known meeting since the pope's return to the Vatican after five weeks in the hospital for life-threatening double pneumonia.
While Pope Francis had originally intended to meet with Charles, the planned state visit to the Vatican was postponed due to the pope's health.
The pope extended a new invitation for a private audience, contingent on his health, which was only confirmed on Wednesday morning.
The visit, which took place in the mid-afternoon, lasted around 20 minutes and included a private exchange of gifts. Talks are ongoing regarding a future visit by the monarch to the Vatican.
A statement from the Vatican said that the pope wished Charles and Camilla a happy anniversary, while the king and queen expressed their wishes for the pope’s speedy recovery.
Buckingham Palace added that "their Majesties were delighted the pope was well enough to host them and to have had the opportunity to convey their best wishes in person."
King Charles also met with Italian actors and drama students before watching scenes from Shakespeare's Othello at the Mattatoio, a regenerated industrial building that used to be Rome's main slaughterhouse.
Meanwhile, Queen Camilla met with children of the Alessandro Manzoni school, during which she received a pizza margherita as a gift from a local pizzeria.
The pair also greeted tourists while stopping for ice cream at the historic Gelateria Giolitti, following King Charles's address to a joint session of the Italian Parliament earlier in the day.
